The Department of Latin Literature at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in collaboration with the foundation PLuS, invites applications for the Basel Fellowships in Latin Literature 2022.

General information

The Basel Fellowships in Latin Literature offer an opportunity for early career researchers as well as established scholars to pursue their research in the framework of a fully funded visit of up to three months at the Department Altertumswissenschaften of the University of Basel. During their stay, Visiting Fellows are entitled to make full use of the excellent resources of the University Library as well as the departmental library, Bibliothek Altertumswissenschaften, one of the world’s leading research libraries for the study of Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations and Classics.

Visiting Fellows are expected to present a paper on their research project, and they are invited (but not obliged) to participate in the various research colloquia and other events at the Departement Altertumswissenschaften. The Fellowship’s main objective is to offer Fellows a period of exclusive research time.

The Scientific Board of the programme will evaluate the applications and appoint Visiting Fellows.


Stipend and allowances

Researchers appointed to the Basel Fellowship are expected to be in residence at the University of Basel for the duration of their Fellowship at Basel; they will be given a work space at the Departement Altertumswissenschaften and granted full access to the facilities and resources of the University Library and the Library of Departement Altertumswissenschaften. In addition, the Fellowship covers the cost of suitable accommodation at the University Guest House, offers travel expenses of up to CHF 1000.– as well as a stipend of CHF 1500.– p/m to contribute to the cost of living.



The Fellowships have a duration of up to three months (minimum stay of one month), either during the University of Basel’s Spring or Autumn Term. The start date is flexible but must be in agreement with the University’s full term (overlap of at least two weeks).



  • Research project with a focus on Classical Latin Literature
  • Doctorate and at least 3 years of post-doc research experience
  • duration of the Fellowship overlaps for at least two weeks with the University of Basel’s full term (see above)
